Argh. Suzy is one of the most stunning women I've ever photographed, but she is also one of the most frustrating. It's hard to take a photo that will please her. This one barely passed her inspection! I consider it a challenge to find out what she really wants (she has some model aspirations) but it's hard when the subject is so vague.

In this shot she's actually lying on the floor of my studio, where I recently got a sheet of grey background paper donated to me by my buddy Eric as payment for finding a model for him to shoot. He also gave me confidence to use my Alien Bees strobes, and it's been kind of weird but exhilarating to shoot brightly lit models these last couple of months.

I think Suzy's a classic pinup model. What do you think?

I might have a touch of SAD--Seasonal Affective Disorder--to go along with all the other crap of getting older. Photography in the winter gets harder and harder for me to bring myself to do, and though I can always shoot in my cozy warm studio, there is nothing like a warm summer evening when the light gets perfect and even the insects dance in delight.

This shot of Kait was taken in July, but thanks to so many photoshoots the last three months I'm just now editing all her photos. Fortunately Kait is one of the coolest people I know and doesn't mind...too much...how long it takes me to go through the photos.

I think part of the beauty of this shot is the fact that my lenses are always dirty, causing the light refraction in the lower two/thirds of this pic. Ha.

Silver at this year's San Diego Comic-Con. We've shot each year for the last four years after I spotted her as the Corpse Bride and she found the photo on my Flickr stream. It's always a pleasure to see her and her friend Kit at the Con, and no matter how crazy and busy it gets there, we manage to find each other.

This shot is taken between two large blue vents on the upper level of the Convention Center in San Diego. The light when she moved there was just perfect. People compare it to the painted comic book art of Alex Ross, and though I agree with the lighting, Silver is way more beautiful than the version Ross does of Power Girl.

Erin came to me with the concept, and even brought the apple and a lot of leaves which I supplemented with leaves from my front yard.

Lighting with Alien Bees in front of her and behind her. I edited out my foot, which was visible on the right as I'm standing near the apple and shooting this without looking through the viewfinder. A simple crop and image rotation finished this off.

No, she's not nude; there is a hint of the orange/red fabric above her shoulders that kept her strategically covered during the shoot.

My hiatus over, I've slowly ramped up shooting again. It was good to recharge the batteries and take care of other business for a few months but towards the end, as the weather improved, I have to admit I got anxious to start up again.

Heather and I shot once before inside the studio when the weather forced us inside, so it was nice to take advantage of our Spring weather and get out for our second shoot. This is at Manito Park. Heather really wanted to shoot in these arches (in the summer wedding parties are often coming through them) and using the 10-22mm lens we kind of took it to the next level.

Aren't those shoes killer?

This is amongst the last portraits I'm going to do for awhile. An idea brewing in my head for some time finally popped out during the holiday season and I've decided to move in a different direction photographically for the next few months. Hopefully I'll return to portraiture reinvigorated!

Erin is a delightful young woman who had had very particular ideas she wanted to achieve, and she called me yesterday thanking me again for the results. The black and white choice in these shots were to focus on the form and I'm really happy with them. She has the two studio lights on her here, the one on the left turned down low. In Photoshop I used the black and white filter with the reds and yellows turned up to get this almost marble finish.

I've really slowed down in the quantity of photoshoots I've done lately. The combination of cold weather, new responsibilities at work and the desire to catch up has resulted in only two or three shoots the last month. This shoot with perennial favorite Jessica and her friend Nicole wass absolutely fun and so many good shots resulted from it that now, two weeks later, I'm still working on them.

This shoot was a day or two after I finally received a replacement for my 17-85mm lens that I took to a shop four months ago (long dull story, but I'm never going to that shop again) and was finally told couldn't be fixed. However this particular shot was done with the 10-22mm wide angle lens, which is why Nicole is so...lengthy in this shot.

The light on this one is interesting. If you look at colors, you'll notice how on the left side of the photo it's orange and yellow, and on the right it's white and blue. The models are laying on a futon and I'm using my two Alien Bees lights on the left, hence the more yellowy cast. On the right just off screen is a window, letting in grey/white/blue late afternoon light.

With the weather getting better I'm not shooting in studio much, and I'm very happy about it. Mind you I like the control of studio lights, and the interesting light you can get on someone that would be hard to replicate outdoors, but nothing beats natural light.

Here we have the best of both worlds. We're in my studio, and Adrienne is looking out the window so natural light is flooding in on her. In many of my pix I up the saturation just a tiny bit to get the photo back to what I saw when I shot, but in this case I dialed it down to give it a different feel.

Adrienne is such a natural beauty that little other work needed to be done on this photo, except cropping it tightly so the Flickr police wouldn't flag it.

Annie asked me to photograph her with her boyfriend's guitars as she bought him a new one for his birthday (this one). Her idea was that she'd print out the photos, one of each of his guitars and he'd open up the photos, thinking the photos were his birthday gift! When he opened up the one with the new ax, she would present it to him from a side closet. I'm happy to say the surprise worked really well.

I was completely impressed with Ann's preparation for this shoot, our first except for a snap or two outside for a Mother's Day card the week before. She had researched online some photos of women and guitars to avoid cliche and get inspired, and we moved from setup to setup fluidly. Her roommate Cam helped enormously except when my cat George visited her, scaring her near to death.

The photos are shot with my Alien Bees 800s, though we're also using a theater light given to me by Sarha a few months ago. In this photo Cam's standing on a chair with it, and the Bees are basically used as fill. Annie's on our futon, and I've blackened the edges to even out the background.

We're planning our next shoot, which has to happen soon because she's graduating and soon she'll exit...forever.

(you'll notice her feet are chopped off in this view...the original on Flickr is the correct one. Seems Blogger's layouts don't allow for a complete photo so they arbitrarily cropped where they saw fit. At least it's not her head!)

Nicole is a fellow photographer (Flickr: blush-response) and amazingly fun to photograph, which we've done twice now (here's her set on my Flickr stream) with great results. Here we're shooting at a small park on Spokane's south side that gets filled with wildflowers in May but we were a bit too early for that.

This shot was taken at the bottom of a huge rock/outcropping where we went to escape the wind. Whereas it was howling throughout the park, here we were protected by the rock and it was very peaceful there. Nothing special in processing here; nothing needed.

Alex is a coworker who's dabbling in the modeling world. I helped her out by agreeing to a shoot at our most photogenic local park. Very little technical work needed for this shoot and postproduction is minimal. Alex is a natural and her athleticism makes for great definition in her poses (check out those calves!).

Amber's standing in the freezing Spokane River in this photo (which was her idea, I must say in defense). This was a great shoot that started above the river at a local winery that has an amazing location and interesting features. The weather was perfect (finally!) and we got a number of cool shots. I chose this one because I really like the textures the branches creates, but there are a number of other pix from this shoot in Amber's set on Flickr that might be better.

Equipment-wise I don't have much to report except I'm happy I didn't use my flash at all during the entire shoot. That makes me extremely happy after a long winter of dark dreary days.

Our endless winter does yield some different looks on campus and beyond. Stephanie is a student I've wanted to shoot with since last year and circumstances brought us together at a dance I was invited to shoot a couple of week ago.

What's cool is she obviously thought very carefully about what she wanted to wear, and where she wanted to shoot. We first shot here, on campus, in a grassy spot that's frozen over and now is melting so had a couple of inches of water covering it. I fired my flash above her head to get the light on her face, and using the 10-22mm wideangle lens forces the narrow view as you look down.

The endless cold weather and snow has forced more studio shoots, and while fun I'm going a little stir crazy! Fortunately Kaeti was in town on school break. This was shot on my black-covered futon holding the camera above her (and not looking through the viewfinder) with the 10-22mm wide angle lens.

In Photoshop I merely blacked out the non-black areas around her and then darkened her leotard so that it essentially disappeared. So, while it may look like she's dancing, she's merely lying on her side. There are two Alien Bee b800 lights situated at her head and at her feet, too, along with some natural light coming in from our right.

What Kaeti does so well is pose with poetry. She knows how to use her hands and work her body in organic ways that seem natural and unforced. She's a joy to photograph and now I can't wait for her next break from school! More shots of Kaeti are here.

This is one of about 400 shots taken the afternoon of Tuesday, December 15. Outside it was about 5º out, but in my little studio it was cozy warm.

The idea behind this shoot was to wrap Melissa in fabric of various sorts. We were very happy with this sequence as the fabric nearly makes her look like a mermaid and since I shot from below she's very tall and statuesque--and since she's actually 5'3 I think she liked the results very much.

I'm so far behind processing photoshoots that this image is from October 29, and I'm posting it here on November 25. And I'm still not done with this shoot--we've even shot again since then!

This photo and others surrounding it were taken at the local arboretum. They have such a huge variety of trees and other foliage that everywhere you turn there's a different kind of background. Makes for great photos, and it's a paradise for senior and wedding photoshoots. Every time I went there this Fall, there was at least one "professional" photographer leading couples, wedding parties or high school students around.

Sarha is easy to photograph. She's very graceful and almost sublime in almost every shot. She's attended a modeling school and does amazing makeup work as well, but it's her poise that sets her apart. I'm looking forward to our next shoot!

As the weather gets colder I find it's harder to motivate myself and a model to go outside and shoot. Thankfully, I have studio lights and a warm little room to shoot in! This shot of Alina is against a black backdrop and I believe she's sitting down. I'm using both of my Alien Bees 800s--one directly in front of her and the other high and to her left pointed down.

Alina's friend Sarha gave me two additional lights that are like mini-novas compared to my Bees, so it will be interesting to incorporate them into shoots. I did use them on this page and they're so bright they leave little shadow to play with. I prefer a little moodier than that, so we'll see how much I end up using them.

I'm pondering a remote battery power pack to haul my lights around on location. That would please Oriana!

I'm lucky to have met a great model and more importantly person named Oriana, who seemingly does it all--model, actress, makeup artist and more. We shot at a nearby wildlife refuge (the only wildlife we saw were some bugs) on Columbus Day and more than two weeks later I'm still going through the 735 photos we took that day!

This shot represents more processing than I'm used to, but the effect was good enough to reach Flickr's Explore pages. It's actually two exposures combined in layers--the horizon and sky are one layer, and the rest is another layer on top of that. Since I don't have portable lighting, I had to cheat since I'm facing the sun here.

Oriana was in fact wearing underwear, too, but I cloned it out because it disrupted the lines and looks more natural without it, based on a suggestion by my wife.

Oriana's pose here is what really makes the shot for me. She gives great poses that are interesting without looking forced. We've shot again since but those pix won't see the light of day for at least another week! I'm so far behind...

This is part of a set on Flickr that Crystal and I did a couple of weeks ago outside of Davenport, Washington.

Because of her amazing makeup and clothing I chose to post them in black and white (I'm also going to give her a set in color) to really make her stand out. These are also more Photoshopped than I usually do in that I'm using the Black and White Image Adjustment in CS3 to intensify the yellows (her hair, the fields) and turn the blues to almost black (the sky). The cool thing is I saved these settings so basically I just have to apply them to each image--sometimes with some minor tweaking--and they're ready to go.

There is winter wheat sprouting at the bottom of those rows, by the way; just not that easy to see.

Of all the shots in their set this one is my favorite. The light is perfect, the gazes are appropriately far-off, and the crop is tight. It was a productive evening.

Lindsi is a local clothing designer and I've agreed to help her by shooting models wearing her designs. We went out last night to find some ideal locations for our shoot and I told her I'd agree to that IF I could photograph her. I love her very unique look.

This is a car junkyard on Trent Avenue in Spokane, Washington. Its fence, as you can see, is entirely composed of wheel rims. I've shot there before and thought it would be a perfect location for her ideas, and she agreed.

This is possibly the best shot from a weekday shoot at Amber Lake, a small lake outside Cheney, Washington. There were two boats on the lake total, and it was sunny and warm (though not warm enough water; Kirsten sports goosebumps in many of the pix). The idea was a "lady of the lake" sort of look, and Kirsten did the best she could to keep her dress spread out around her despite the light current and the various air bubbles that would get underneath the garment.

These are shot with my new Canon 40d, which adds megapixels, better and more ISO settings and a huge LCD screen on the back. Oh, and it's quieter, too.

Nicole came over in April and helped me break in my studio lights. I have two Alien Bees B800s and our room that's converted into my studio has red walls.

Nicole always comes prepared. She had several changes of clothing with her (you can count them if you want by going to her set page on Flickr and starting in row 6.

We had a blast moving the lights around and experimenting with backlighting, side lighting, one light setups and more. I've since incorporated what I quickly learned with other models and it's been a blast to shoot even with our lousy weather so far this spring.

Now that the weather is improving (well, not today, but lately) I'll be shooting outside again much more, which I prefer. Nicole and I plan a shoot downtown soon, when our schedules sync up again.

A Red Couch and a Pretty Girl

Tey and I shot at the new Magic Lantern Theater, located inside the Community Building on Main Avenue in downtown Spokane. We'd scouted the location a few days previous, and the red couch in the small lobby of the theater was irresistible. Tey wore a new dress for the occasion, and we took hundreds of shots.

The woman running the concession stand offered suggestions for poses, and the owner of the theater told us about how they came to acquire the couch, and how the daughter of the original owner wanted it back!

Tey looked glamourous and beautiful, so this shoot was easy and fun. I managed to haul one of my new Alien Bees B800 lights down to the shoot, and it's providing the light here.

Kim and I shot 493 photos last night. This was the second shot I took, inside the men's room in the Art Building on campus. The hall outside the bathroom is a brilliant green (see this photo) so we were planning to shoot there and noticed the door was open. It was late, so how could we resist?

It really is a whole 'nother beast trying to photograph a couple. I met Lucy and Brett at a local coffee shop I've shot at before that I know would provide good light (it was about 25 degrees outside and windy) so we could stay inside and they could be comfortable. This shop has nice red walls and lots of wood paneling accents. I can't speak for their coffee, as I get Pepsi when I'm there!

I used the 580ex flash a lot in these, bouncing it off to the right to get just a bit of illumination. Several of the shots were not so good as one would be nicely lit and the other...not so. Then there's always the focus issues, since I like to be up close when I shoot. More photos are here.

This is at Manito Park, the beautiful South Hill park in the town I live in. Nicole is a Flickr user as well who I met at a Photoroll a couple of months ago. (a photoroll is a gathering of Flickr photographers at a location for shooting and socializing, a term coined by photographer Ben Delaney) Via email we agreed to meet at snowy Manito Park, and I was delighted to see she'd brought several different dresses to wear--even though it was approximately 27º with a slight breeze while we shot. In this one she's wearing a prom dress, and while she is indeed barefoot--her boots are just off camera--she is standing on her new white scarf, which I slightly Photoshopped to make less distracting. It was a totally enjoyable shoot (more viewable here) because she obviously put some thought into it and had a plan. And though she'd never modeled before, she had a great variety of gestures and poses ready--she claimed she's watched one of those TV reality model shows for inspiration.

This photo shoot was Amber's idea, and she nearly froze to death. It was about 25° outside when we shot these, so we'd shoot a few in a row and then she'd run back inside to thaw out and warm up. This is at the university's PE complex in an inner courtyard. And yes, people would walk by gawking in the background quite often.

Amber's a runner, so her legs are long and don't have a smidge of fat on 'em.

I'm using no flash. There was a two-light stand nearby that a painter must have left that I plugged in and directed towards her, and that might have helped a bit. I'm shooting at 1600ISO so there's lots of grain. I adjusted this a lot in RAW to get the right exposure and tint.

I gave her crap later for keeping her watch on.

I was lucky enough to use actual studio lights at work on Thursday. It came up because Alina needed some studio shots to turn in to an agency, and I had just been told my colleague Eric had an impromptu studio setup a couple of buildings over. So I called him and he was kind enough to meet us and set up the lighting and get my camera set to use. Otherwise I'd have had no clue whatsoever what I was doing!

There is a spot behind her left shoulder, up quite high, a reflector just off screen on her left, and a monster light with a grid-thing on it to her right. I'm standing about 10 feet back in front of her, trying not to pull the cords out of their sockets, snapping away. From start to finish we were there for just over an hour, nearly half of that setting up!

I think they came out just great--I was on a photographic high after we finished, and we were walking back to my office. I'm working on cropping them right now so she can print out a few to hand in.

Amber suggested this shoot. Originally we were going to do it in the summer (and I hope we will this next summer) but never got around to it. It was about 28° and windy when we arrived here, behind the football stadium at school.

All the images in this set (starts here) are 'Shopped to a degree. I opened the images up twice, and put the darker exposure on top of the lighter exposure, then erased Amber's figure to expose the lighter version underneath. In this photo I also erased the dark foreground to expose the lighter version beneath. A little darkening of the top, and I was done. I also cleaned up a couple of water spots on my lens...I really need to clean that thing up!

I took pix of Kim and Nick on Wednesday, November 21. This is in Senior Hall on campus, where I've shot Kim and others before. It affords great cushy chairs and couches, light streaming in from the west and plenty of room and relative privacy in which to shoot.

On several of the shots in the set I used my 580ex flash for fill and highlighting. The sun only came out only briefly while we shot, something I'm getting used to as we entrench in the ugly winter months. Generally I hate using artificial light but I've gotten used to using the 580, and sometimes get pretty excited with the results. Here I was up in the 800 or 1600 ISO range, mostly, but the 20d performs admirably even under those high speed conditions.

Kim suggested photos of the two of them via email a few days prior. People have been encouraging me to take more photographs of men, and Nick was an ideal candidate. Generally I just don't find guys as interesting to photograph--but obviously I have to be comfortable doing it too, and Kim was sweet enough to offer up her guy.

It's always fun to photograph Kim--and Nick was great fun too. We're already talking about our next shoot.

I took this looking southeast as the sun was setting to the right. I did lighten the foreground grass slightly to contrast it better against the sky. I was down in this area with Christina, whose friend Gordon took us to this location. It's a stunning place with run-down sheds, this old windmill, and an amazing abandoned homestead where I shot several pix of Chris. I'm grateful that I live so close to great locales like these, that feel like they're right out of a Malick film.

we spent Saturday at Hoopfest in downtown Spokane. This shot is early before the games and the crowds descended. The building on the far right is scheduled for demolition by mid-July, which means this art deco edifice is about to become...a parking lot. Of course.

I was saddened to learn of the death of comic book artist Seth Fisher.

Fisher created truly unique visions that rose above the cliches of modern comics. He was a soft-spoken gentleman when I met him at the San Diego Comic-Con two summers ago, graciously showing me pages from the recent Batman series he'd done.
I'm sorry to see him go.

Mayor Quimby, that is, as per tonight's Simpson's episode...as for our local mayor, the results may be far different. I voted today via absentee ballot--the way to vote, as far as I'm concerned. It's easy, quick, and you are more likely to vote if you don't have to make a special trip somewhere to do it. We started doing this last year when we went abroad, and have never looked back. Do yourself a favor and vote--every election--and vote via absentee ballot.

I'm sitting in a dining common area at the university I work at. The guy behind me is trying to impress the blonde he's talking to, telling her since she's half-Italian (he was confused because of the blonde hair, though we saw plenty of blondes in Italy) that his trip to Italy was so great because he and his cohorts "saved" so many while there--non-stop witnessing, I think he said. They "saved" 69 people in Siena, and he was very proud of that.

In Italy.

Italy, the cradle of Catholicism, where 45% of the population attends church frequently (United States: 44%) and 58 million of its citizens profess to being Catholic. He explained to the gullible co-ed that Italy is old, and hasn't heard the word of the lord. I guess this is why he needed to be over there--praise the lord! They haven't figured out religion and god themselves after thousands of years.

Well, now he's saying the trains in Italy are horrible. We didn't have a single problem while we were there. So, I have no idea if this is impressing the girl he's talking to, but he's talking non-stop, so some of it might stick.

This is a test of Ecto, a blogging tool I learned about from Ben. Is it indeed as wonderful as all the reviews? Well...it's not bad--easy to set up. Let's see how this post goes! Update: ehhhh. Not smoothly. And it wouldn't publish the post up above, so I'm going to go back to doing this the old way, straight through Blogger. Seems like an added layer of work to do it through Ecto, anyway.
